This 1780 map of Newport, Rhode Island, shows a town that had spent nearly three years under British occupation, ending in October 1779. In July 1780 Rochambeau's French expeditionary force landed there and made the port its base, so maps of the town from this period were made with military needs in mind, such as harbor approaches, roads, and fortifications. Newport was one of colonial New England's busiest seaports, and this view records a place whose importance to both armies came from its harbor. It is worth studying for how it reflects a town shaped by war and a shifting alliance.
