Newport News sits on the north shore of Hampton Roads, where the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway built its coal piers and deep-water terminal in the 1880s. This 1891 bird's-eye view shows the young town as a planned railroad and port city, with its rail lines, wharves and shipyard set out in perspective from above. Panoramic maps like this were popular in the late 1800s, when towns commissioned them to advertise growth to investors and new residents. The American Publishing Company of Milwaukee was one of the firms that produced many such views, so the map also reflects the printing style of its era.
