This bird's-eye panorama of Roanoke, Virginia, was published in 1891 by the American Publishing Co. of Milwaukee, a firm known for its town views of the period. The place had taken the name Roanoke only in 1882, replacing the older village name Big Lick, and it was growing fast as a railroad junction in the Shenandoah Valley. Drawn from an imagined high vantage point, the map records streets, rail lines and principal buildings, giving a snapshot of a town in the middle of its boom.
