Elliott Bay and the small settlement along its eastern shore are the focus of this 1878 map of Seattle, which was then a young town in Washington Territory. The city was still built around its waterfront, where Henry Yesler's steam sawmill and the logging trade that supplied it drove the local economy. Maps from this period often show streets, lots, and waterfront structures as residents and investors planned for growth, and the railroad that would reach Seattle in 1884 was still years away. Comparing the street grid here with the modern city shows how much the town expanded after statehood in 1889.
