This 1905 panoramic map shows Spokane from above in the bird's-eye style that publishers favored for American cities around the turn of the century. It was issued by John W. Graham & Co., a firm based in Spokane itself, so the local street layout and landmarks were drawn from a community that knew them well. Spokane had been rebuilt after a major downtown fire in 1889 and was growing quickly as a railroad and milling center along the Spokane River. Maps like this served as civic promotion as much as navigation, presenting the city as orderly and prosperous.
