Bristol, a harbor town on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, is the focus of this 1891 panoramic map by the Boston firm O.H. Bailey & Co., known for bird's-eye town views drawn as if seen from a hillside. By 1891 the town's economy rested on maritime trade and manufacturing, and the Herreshoff yacht works, founded there in 1878, was building sailboats that would win international fame. Bristol's Fourth of July parade, dating to the late 1700s, still draws crowds and is often cited as one of the oldest such celebrations in the country.
