Durham was one of the fastest-growing tobacco towns in the South during the 1880s and early 1890s, and this 1891 bird's-eye view records that boom at its height. Panoramic maps like this one were drawn from an imagined vantage point high above the town, so streets, rail lines, and factory districts appear in sweeping perspective rather than on a flat plan. The town's economy rested on tobacco, and the manufacturing works that processed it drew workers and investment to the area in these years. The map was produced by the firm of Ruger & Stoner and printed by the Burleigh lithographic shop, a pairing typical of the commercial map trade of the period.
