Washburn, on Chequamegon Bay in Wisconsin's Lake Superior country, was named for Cadwallader C. Washburn, a former Wisconsin governor with extensive lumber and milling interests. This 1886 panoramic map, produced by the Milwaukee lithographers Norris, Wellge & Co. and Beck & Pauli, shows the young town during the regional timber boom, when sawmills, docks and railroads moved northern forests toward the lake for shipment. Maps of this kind were drawn from an elevated, angled viewpoint, so each street, dock and building appears in careful detail, making them useful records of how small Midwestern towns were laid out in the 1880s.
