Few towns on Lake Superior sit as close to open water as Bayfield, a small port on the tip of the Bayfield Peninsula facing the Apostle Islands. This 1886 bird's-eye view, produced by the firm of Henry Wellge and his partners, shows the town from an elevated angle during the lumber and fishing activity that shaped the northern Wisconsin shoreline in those years. Panoramic maps like this were commercial productions sold to residents and businesses, so they show what a community wanted to display, from its streets and wharves to its churches and houses. The waterfront is worth studying closely to see how the town was arranged around its harbor.
