Ashland sits on Chequamegon Bay along the south shore of Lake Superior, and this 1886 bird's-eye view captures it during its years as a busy lumber port. Henry Wellge, a Milwaukee lithographer, drew the town from an elevated oblique angle, so docks, mill yards, church spires and street grids all appear at once in a way a surveyor's plat could not show. Railroads and lumber money were transforming the bay in the 1880s, and town views like this were often bought by residents and boosters who wanted to see their community laid out in full. The waterfront is worth a close look, where the mills and rail lines crowd the shore.
