The Panamint district, in the mountains west of Death Valley, drew this 1875 map at the height of its silver boom. Prospectors had opened rich silver ore there only a few years earlier, and the camp of Panamint City grew quickly around the workings in the rugged Panamint Range. Maps from this period were often made to show claims, roads, and water sources in terrain that was hard to cross, so they reveal how a remote mining settlement was laid out and reached. The boom was short-lived, and the district's decline in the later 1870s is part of what makes its early maps worth studying.
