Drawn from above in fine detail, this 1900 panorama shows Oakland on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay at the turn of the century. The city had grown quickly after the transcontinental railroad reached its waterfront in 1869, and maps like this let viewers take in streets, rail lines, and the bay edge at once. The lithograph is credited to Fred Soderberg and the Mutual Label and Lithograph Company, which made many such city views. Look closely at the harbor and the street grid to see how the town was laid out.
