Pasadena's 1903 panoramic map captures a city that had grown quickly from its start in the 1870s as a citrus and resort colony at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. Panoramic maps like this one drew towns in an oblique, bird's-eye perspective, so streets, houses, and landmarks appear as they would from a high vantage point, and they were often used to promote civic pride. By 1903 Pasadena was known for its winter visitors, its grand hotels, and the annual Tournament of Roses, and the map shows how those features sat within the valley.
