Sacramento sits where the American and Sacramento rivers meet, a location that made it a center of the Gold Rush supply trade and the state capital by 1854. This 1890 panoramic map uses the high, angled bird's-eye view that W.W. Elliott & Co. was known for, showing streets, buildings and rail lines as if seen from above. The detail makes it useful for seeing how a river city of the period was laid out, with its rail lines and waterfront close together.
