Red Wing sits on a bend of the Mississippi River in Goodhue County, and this 1880 bird's-eye view shows the town from above, with its river frontage, streets, and rising bluffs laid out in fine detail. The map was drawn by Shober & Carqueville, a Chicago firm known for lithographed panoramic town views that promoted local growth and were often sold to residents and businesses. The town took its name from a Dakota leader, and by 1880 it was a busy river port with milling and grain shipping. Its buildings and wharves offer a useful picture of a small Upper Mississippi community during a period of rapid expansion.
