This 1870 bird's-eye panorama shows Stillwater, a town on the St. Croix River near the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. In the 1860s and 1870s, the river's lumber trade made Stillwater one of the busiest sawmill and log-boom centers in the region, and the town's streets, mills and river landings were the kind of detail these maps were made to show. The view was drawn by A. Ruger and printed by the Merchant's Lithographing Company, part of a boom in highly detailed town views that promoted growing Midwestern communities. Look closely at the riverfront and the rooftops for the working landscape behind the town.
