Clarksville sits where the Red and Cumberland rivers meet in northern Tennessee, and this 1870 bird's-eye view shows the town as it looked only a few years after the Civil War. Its river location made it a regional hub for tobacco and river shipping, and the town's growth is visible in the close-set buildings and streets drawn along the waterfront. Ruger & Stoner produced this panoramic map in the style popular in the late 1860s and 1870s, when lithographed town views presented each community in a detailed, angled perspective. Like many maps of the period, it is valuable both for its artistry and as a record of how a Southern river town saw itself during Reconstruction.
