Akron's canal and rubber history frame this bird's-eye view of the city, drawn in 1870, the same year B.F. Goodrich established his rubber company there. The Ohio and Erie Canal, which ran through town, shaped its mills and warehouses, and the map shows the settlement as if seen from a high vantage point. Ruger & Stoner, a Chicago firm, issued many such panoramic views of Midwestern towns, which often included small illustrated buildings and advertisements from local businesses in their margins.
