Drawn in 1877, this bird's-eye view presents Cleveland on the south shore of Lake Erie, where the Cuyahoga River meets the lake, as if seen from high above. The panorama was produced by Shober & Carqueville, a Chicago lithography firm, with J. J. Stoner and A. Ruger credited for the drawing. Views like this were popular in the 1870s and 1880s, when booming industrial cities wanted accurate, appealing portraits of their streets, rail lines, and waterfront. Cleveland was then growing quickly on the strength of shipping, iron, and oil refining, and the map records that expansion in its dense rows of buildings.
