Helena, Montana, appears here as a bird's-eye panorama, a format that let mapmakers show a whole town at once, with streets, buildings, and surrounding hills drawn in perspective rather than from directly above. This 1883 view was produced by the Beck & Pauli lithographic firm, with J. J. Stoner credited as the artist, and it captures Helena during its years as a booming mining center after gold was found in the nearby gulches in the 1860s. Panoramic maps like this one were sold to residents and civic boosters, so they tell us as much about how the town wanted to see itself as about its exact layout.
