Nashua, New Hampshire, is the subject here, drawn as a bird's-eye panoramic map from 1883. Maps of this type were popular in the late nineteenth century, when artists and lithographers, often working from aerial-style viewpoints, sketched entire towns with their streets, rail lines, factories and houses in lifelike detail. Nashua was then a busy mill city on the Merrimack River, and a view like this captures how its industry, rail connections and residential neighborhoods fit together on the ground. Reduced versions such as this one preserve the layout while showing the town as a whole.
