Duluth's 1883 panoramic map shows a lakeside port that had grown quickly after the Northern Pacific Railway reached the harbor in 1870, making it a shipping point for lumber and rail freight on Lake Superior. Henry Wellge drew the town from an elevated oblique angle, a style favored by promoters and mapmakers of the period, so the streets, docks and buildings read as if seen from a nearby hilltop. Beck & Pauli handled the lithography, and J. J. Stoner is credited as publisher. The view captures a town still taking shape on the steep slope above the water.
