Drawn from a high oblique angle, this 1887 panoramic map shows Duluth, Minnesota, as a city on the steep hillside above Lake Superior. Henry Wellge, a artist known for bird's-eye city views, made the drawing, and the Duluth News Company and the lithography firm Beck & Pauli published it. By the mid-1880s Duluth was booming as a shipping port for grain and iron ore, with railroads linking it to the interior, and maps like this were often sold to local residents and boosters as a record of that growth.
