Unlike the other Midwestern town views on this board, this one shows West Superior, the Wisconsin side of the harbor at the western tip of Lake Superior, across the bay from Duluth. Milwaukee firm Henry Wellge & Co. issued it in 1887 as a bird's-eye panorama, a popular format of the period that let residents and investors take in streets, rail lines and waterfront at a glance. The town's growth in those years was tied to lumber, grain and rail shipping, which made its harbor central to local life. Views like this one often presented a rapidly growing place with an optimistic, idealized perspective.
