Montgomery, Alabama, takes center stage in this 1887 bird's-eye view, one of the panoramic city maps that Henry Wellge and his firm drew in the late nineteenth century to show urban growth in precise detail. Montgomery had been the capital of Alabama since 1846 and was a busy river and rail hub by the 1880s, and the panorama captures its streets, public buildings and developing business district from an elevated angle. Wellge's panoramas were prized by civic boosters and insurers alike, so the map doubles as a record of how the city presented itself at the time.
