Few American cities sit as close together as Superior, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota, which share a harbor at the western tip of Lake Superior and appear side by side in this bird's-eye view. Henry Wellge, a Milwaukee-based artist known for panoramic city views, drew the map from an elevated angle that shows streets, docks, and rail lines in fine detail. By 1915 the twin ports were major shipping points for iron ore from the Mesabi Range and for grain moving east, and the map captures that industrial waterfront as much as the residential neighborhoods above it.
