Oshkosh sits on the western shore of Lake Winnebago, where the Fox River leaves the lake on its way north to Green Bay, and this bird's-eye view shows the town as it stood in 1867. Lumber was the engine of the local economy then, with sawmills and log booms along the river shaping the waterfront. Albert Ruger, working for the Chicago Lithographing Company, produced many panoramic city views in the 1860s and 1870s, each meant to show streets, buildings and industry in one detailed sheet. Today the map serves as a record of a Midwestern lumber town during its fast growth.
