Madison's narrow isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona sets this 1867 bird's-eye view apart, with the streets radiating from the Capitol Square and water on two sides of the city. Albert Ruger drew the view for the Chicago Lithographing Company, one of many panoramic city maps that were popular across the Midwest in the decades after the Civil War. Madison had become the territorial capital in 1836 and the state capital when Wisconsin entered the Union in 1848, and the map shows a government and university center growing out from that base.
