Few town views from the 1860s capture Watertown as fully as this 1867 bird's-eye panorama, which shows the city from an elevated angle as if seen from above. A. Ruger drew the view for the Chicago Lithographing Company, one of several firms that issued such city portraits across the Midwest in the decades after the Civil War. Maps like this were sold to residents and local boosters who wanted a picture of their growing community, and today they serve historians as detailed records of street layouts and building footprints. Watertown, settled on the Rock River in the 1830s, had developed a strong base of mills and small manufacturers by then, and those industrial buildings are worth looking for along the river.
