Madison, on the Connecticut shore of Long Island Sound, is the subject of this 1881 bird's-eye view, one of the panoramic town maps that O.H. Bailey & Co. of Boston produced in the late nineteenth century. Its perspective drawings show buildings, streets, and the waterfront from an elevated angle, as if the viewer were looking down from a hillside. Such views were usually commissioned with the help of local subscribers, who often appeared in the margins or were named in an accompanying key. Madison was then a village with a long history of coastal farming and oystering, and the map offers a detailed record of how the town looked at the time.
