Manchester, Connecticut, is the subject of this 1914 bird's-eye panorama, drawn by the firm Hughes & Bailey. The Cheney Brothers silk mills, which shaped the town's economy and the village of South Manchester for generations, are the sort of landmark such views were meant to show. Panoramic maps like this were drawn from an imagined high vantage point, so streets, buildings and rail lines appear in recognizable perspective rather than flat plan. Their value today lies in capturing a town at one moment, with its layout and industry visible before later changes.
