This bird's-eye view shows St. Paul, the Minnesota capital, laid out along the Mississippi below steep bluffs, with downtown streets, rail yards and riverfront drawn in fine detail. Henry Wellge drew the city from an elevated angle, a method that let viewers see streets, blocks and individual buildings at once, and Beck & Pauli of Milwaukee produced the lithograph. In 1883 St. Paul was a busy river port and railroad hub, so the map captures a city in the middle of rapid growth.
