Few towns on the New England coast were drawn with as much care as Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in this 1877 panoramic map. Its bird's-eye perspective lets viewers see the harbor, the streets climbing from the Piscataqua River, and individual buildings as they stood in the late 1870s. Albert Ruger, one of the leading panoramic map artists of the era, worked with J. J. Stoner and the D. Bremner Co. to produce such views for sale to local residents and businesses. Portsmouth, founded in 1623 and long tied to shipbuilding and maritime trade, makes an especially rich subject for this kind of town portrait.
