Hudson sits on the St. Croix River at the Wisconsin-Minnesota line, and this 1870 bird's-eye view shows the town from an angled height so that streets, rooftops, and the riverfront read almost like a drawing of a landscape. Albert Ruger made many of these panoramic town views in the late 1860s and early 1870s, and they were lithographed for sale to residents who wanted a picture of their community as it looked at the time. In a river town whose economy depended on lumber, boats, and trade, the map's emphasis on the waterfront and the layout of its streets records how the settlement was built around the river. Viewers today can use it to trace lots, buildings, and the town's relation to its waterways.
