Lake Geneva, the glacial lake that gives this Walworth County resort town its name, is the real focus here, drawn from a high vantage point so the shoreline, streets and lakefront estates all appear at once. The bird's-eye view was drawn by Henry Wellge, a prolific panoramic artist, and printed by the Milwaukee lithographers Beck & Pauli. By 1882 the town had become a popular summer destination for Chicago and Midwestern visitors, and the rail connections and hotels that served them are typical of what these maps were made to celebrate. The map offers a detailed record of how the town was laid out in that boom period.
