This 1882 bird's-eye view shows Gunnison, a Colorado town named for John W. Gunnison, the Army surveyor killed in Utah in 1853. The town grew quickly as a railroad and mining supply center in the Gunnison River valley, and its arrival of rail service in the early 1880s is the kind of change such maps were made to celebrate. J. J. Stoner drew the view in his angled, detailed style, and the Milwaukee lithographers Beck & Pauli printed it. Panoramic maps like this one recorded streets, buildings and landmarks as a town looked to a boosting public, so they are useful for seeing how a young Western settlement was laid out.
