Denver's spread across the South Platte valley, with the Front Range rising behind it, is what sets this bird's-eye view apart from the other western city panoramas on the board. Henry Wellge drew it in 1889 for the American Publishing Co. of Milwaukee, which issued many such city views in the 1880s and 1890s. Denver was then a fast-growing mining and railroad hub and the capital of a state that had joined the Union in 1876, so the map shows a city pushing quickly onto the prairie. Its oblique angle lets viewers see streets, rail lines and individual buildings all at once.
