Winona sits on a bluff-lined stretch of the Mississippi in southeastern Minnesota, and this 1889 bird's-eye view shows the town from a high oblique angle, so the river, streets, and rooftops read together at a glance. C.J. Pauli & Co. made many panoramic city views in the late 1800s, when growing river and rail towns often wanted to see themselves drawn in fine detail. In 1889 Winona's economy relied heavily on lumber, flour milling, and river shipping, so the waterfront and mill district are worth a close look. The building-by-building detail also makes the map a useful record of the streetscape of that period.
