Albion's view is distinguished by its college, since Albion College, founded in 1835 as a Methodist seminary, is one of the institutions the town's bird's-eye layout highlights. Albert Ruger, who drew many town views for the Chicago Lithographing Company, worked in an era when these maps served as civic portraits and promotional pieces, presenting a town as an orderly arrangement of streets, churches and businesses. Printed in 1868, the map captures Albion in the years after the Civil War, when railroads were linking small Michigan towns to wider markets. Note how buildings are drawn in profile while the streets recede toward a vantage point high above the town.
