Grand Rapids sits on the Grand River in western Michigan, and this 1868 view shows it from an elevated angle, so streets, rooftops and the river all appear at once. The artist, A. Ruger, worked with the Chicago Lithographing Company, which printed many of the bird's-eye city views that were popular in the 1860s and 1870s as growing towns sought to display their streets, churches and businesses. Lumber and furniture manufacturing were shaping the city's growth during this period, so the map offers a snapshot of a community expanding in the years after the Civil War.
