This bird's-eye view shows Muskegon, Michigan, a lake port on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan that grew rapidly on the strength of its lumber mills and the shipping that carried their output. Albert Ruger, a prolific panoramic map artist, drew the city in perspective from an imagined high vantage point, so streets, waterfront, and buildings appear as they might look from above. Published by the Chicago Lithographing Company in 1868, the map reflects the postwar boom in American town promotion, when such views were sold to residents and businesses eager to show their community's growth. Viewers today often use these maps to locate vanished structures and to see how a lumber town arranged its docks, mills, and streets.
