From an elevated, angled vantage, this 1868 panorama presents Chicago as a city of rail lines, lakefront shipping, and crowded commercial blocks. Augustus Ruger drew views like this for the Chicago Lithographing Company during a popular vogue for bird's-eye city portraits, which appealed to residents and businesses proud of their towns. The map is especially valuable today because much of the city it depicts was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, so it preserves streets and buildings that no longer stand.
