Theodore R. Davis, an illustrator best known for his wartime and later work for *Harper's Weekly*, drew this bird's-eye panorama of Chicago, showing the lakeside city at once from an elevated oblique angle. Davis combined close street-level detail with a wide aerial sweep, so the river, its bridges, the rail lines and the Lake Michigan shore can all be traced. Its 1871 date places it at the edge of the Great Chicago Fire of October that year, which destroyed much of the downtown shown here, making the map a valuable record of the city just before that loss.
