This bird's-eye panorama of Chicago was produced in 1897 by the Poole Brothers, a Chicago firm known for large city-view lithographs, and it bears the name of the Rock Island and Pacific Railway. It shows the city about a generation after the Great Fire of 1871 destroyed much of its center, when rebuilding had made Chicago one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Viewers can trace the lakefront, the river branches, and the dense network of streets and rail lines that made Chicago a major railroad hub.
