This bird's-eye view shows Nashville, the Tennessee state capital, as it looked in 1897, with the Cumberland River curving past the city's streets and buildings. The State Capitol, completed in 1859 on a hill above downtown, is the natural landmark to look for, and the view also takes in the city's rail lines and the river crossings that made Nashville a regional hub. Panoramic maps like this one were popular in the late 1800s because they let viewers see a whole town at once, with houses, churches, and businesses drawn in recognizable detail. Such views were often used to promote cities to investors and residents.
