Grand Haven sits where the Grand River meets Lake Michigan, and this 1874 bird's-eye view shows the town as if seen from a high vantage point above the lake and harbor. Charles Shober & Co. published the map, with artists A. Ruger and J. J. Stoner credited for the drawing and the Chicago Lithographing Company credited for the printing. Panoramic views like this were popular in the 1870s because they offered residents and investors a detailed picture of streets, docks and principal buildings. The waterfront is worth a close look, since shipping and lumber drove the town's economy.
