Beyond the name Mrs. S. Loebinger and the gesture of a wave, the record says little about this January 1910 image, and that gesture is what sets it apart from the street and crowd scenes that make up much of the collection. The title comes from caption data the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives or cards, and it has not been independently verified. The agency, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York, sold news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so a picture like this one reflects its everyday work of recording people in the city. The 5 by 7 inch glass plate also shows how press photographers worked before roll film became standard.
