This interior shows the living room of a house belonging to Mrs. Robert Hoe Jr. in Port Washington, a village on the North Shore of Long Island. The Hoe name was tied to R. Hoe & Company, the Manhattan firm known for printing presses, and in the early 1900s the North Shore drew wealthy families who built large homes there as country retreats. The picture is a glass dry plate negative of about 8 by 10 inches, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American places and interiors around 1900 to 1910. Its record also notes a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
