A bedroom in the Port Washington, New York, home of Mrs. Robert Hoe, Jr., is the subject here, a rare interior view in a collection better known for landscapes, resorts, and city streets. Port Washington sits on Long Island's North Shore, where wealthy families built large country and suburban houses during the early 1900s, and the room's furnishings reflect the comfortable, ordered domestic life those households kept. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1910, when the firm was selling photographs of places and scenes to a broad public. The negative later came to the State Historical Society of Colorado as a gift in 1949.
