This view centers on the Irving Place and East Seventeenth Street corner in Manhattan, where the record places a home associated with Washington Irving, the author of "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." The street that bears his name honors a writer who helped give New York a literary identity in the early 1800s, though he spent his final years at Sunnyside, his estate on the Hudson. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American cities and landscapes in the decades around 1900, and this glass negative likely dates from between 1900 and 1915. Its record also shows the building and street as they stood in those years, when the neighborhood was changing rapidly.
